AZA4ICE introduces primary school students in Portugal to circular aquaculture

26/06/2026

Between 22 and 26 June 2026, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve organised circular aquaculture sessions for third- and fourth-grade primary school students from Loulé, Faro, Olhão and Tavira.

These municipalities are located within the Ria Formosa area, one of Portugal’s important aquaculture regions and a territory involved in AZA4ICE.

Organised as part of the project, the sessions introduced Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) through a practical and engaging approach. Students explored how circular economy principles can be applied to aquaculture to optimise resource use, reduce waste and minimise impacts on ecosystems.

By connecting aquaculture with environmental education, the activity helped younger generations understand how food production and the protection of aquatic environments can be addressed together. It also supported AZA4ICE’s wider efforts to raise awareness of circular practices and their relevance to local communities.
