AZA4ICE at the Sun&Blue Conference: Advancing Circular and Inclusive Aquaculture

28/11/2025

AZA4ICE took part in the III Blue Tourism & Economy Congress in Almería, contributing to one of the event’s key thematic sessions titled “Designing the Blue Future Together: Circular and Inclusive Aquaculture in Coexistence with Tourism.” The session was co-hosted with IFAPA, reflecting the strong collaboration within the Mediterranean blue economy community.

Expertly moderated by Manuel Manchado (IFAPA), the panel brought together valuable perspectives from Veronica Santinelli, Fabio Carella, Francisco P. Zurita, Johan Robbens, and Margarita Laboisse, each offering insights into how coastal regions can balance environmental protection, economic opportunity, and community needs.

Throughout the session, speakers and participants explored several key themes:

  • Coexistence of aquaculture and tourism: How these sectors can thrive side by side through responsible planning and shared use of coastal spaces.

  • Territorial dialogue: The critical role of engaging local communities and stakeholders to build trust and ensure fair, transparent, and collaborative approaches to blue economy development.

  • Circular and inclusive aquaculture models: Opportunities to integrate innovation, sustainability, and social inclusion into aquaculture practices.

  • Good practices and challenges: Examples from across the Mediterranean and the steps needed to support wider adoption of circular strategies.

The exchange highlighted the growing momentum toward regenerative, community-driven approaches in coastal management—an ambition fully aligned with the goals of AZA4ICE.

We extend our sincere thanks to all speakers and participants for contributing to an inspiring, forward-looking discussion. Their expertise and engagement continue to drive progress toward a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Mediterranean blue economy.
